Indian carpets
The production of hand-knotted carpets began in India in the 16th century. They got some skilled Persian knotters to move to India, and they learnt the art of carpet making from them. Indian carpet art experienced a boom during the time of the great mogul Djahan, who was a great art lover and who commissioned the building of the famous Taj Mahal. Only at the beginning of the 20th century did India start exporting carpets in larger quantities. At the same time, production became more commercial. Much like in Pakistan, the Indians mainly produce Persian patterns. The quality of the Indian carpets fluctuates, like in the other carpet production nations. Many carpets were exported that did nothing to benefit the reputation of Indian carpets, and this practice continues today. However, in recent years, I have been positively surprised on several occasions by some of the handicraft originating from Indian looms.
